Connect:

  • In what circumstances are you most likely to seek the Lord?  In what circumstances are you most likely to avoid or evade God and turn to something/one else?

Cultivate:

  • These chapters in Hosea reveal three ways that the Israelites tried to be God’s people without dealing with God in their daily lives and circumstances:
    • Faithlessness: This detour has to do with trusting the powers and things of this world more than the Lord.  How did Israel take this detour (Hos. 5:8ff)?  How might it show up in your life?  Why?
    • Fickleness: This detour has to do with depersonalizing the Living, Holy God into a manageable resource at our disposal, to our liking.  How did Israel take this detour (Hos. 6)?  How might it show up in your life?  Why?
    • Deceitfulness: This detour has to do with saying we believe in and follow Christ, but not living like it while assuming that God won’t hold us accountable.  How did Israel take this detour (Hos. 7)?  How might it show up in your life?  Why?

Commission:

  • How can you take God seriously in everyday life?  What are some practices/disciplines that can help?  How can you support one another in living a life that acknowledges God’s presence and seeks to do God’s will?
